Newborns Theater Troupe is proud to present their debut production, BORN, as part of the 20th annual New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC.

BORN introduces four not-so-normal ladies with red noses as they awaken in a mysterious universe. Original (and sometimes improvised) live music, from an on-stage piano, colors everything and guides the laws of the world. In discovering each other, the clowns undertake a courageous, though sometimes hysterically awkward, journey to find their place and their purpose.

BORN is an exploration of the universality of human experience and choice in all facets, both in a vacuum and within the context of our social environment. Inevitably, however, BORN inherently spotlights the presence of female energy in the traditionally male-dominated world of clowning and physical theater. Music and storyline situations inject the ladies’ universe with more masculine and gender-neutral influence, but the perspective of BORN remains viewed squarely through the lens of the four ladies as they confront issues in their world that are likewise familiar and ubiquitous to the known universe.

The members of Newborns first came together at University of North Carolina School of the Arts when Cirque du Soleil commissioned an original 15-minute clown piece in 2014. In 2015, members of the troupe expanded that piece into a full-length production that premiered at Lincoln Center Education in 2015 as part of the Kenan Performing Arts Fellowship. The troupe has now reformed as Newborns, comprised of screen and stage actors Adelaide Lummis, Emma Coulter, Jasmine Stiefel, and Meagan Kimberly Smith, along with musical director and pianist Zachary Saffa.

BORN aims to entertain, to inspire, and to provoke imagination and deep thought as the ladies of the nose explore the seemingly unrecognizable universe, though as it proves, one not terribly dissimilar from ours.
